Shucen Yi is a CARE researcher and PhD candidate at Massey University, New Zealand. Her doctoral research aims to explore the digital health experiences of empty-nest elderly individuals in China, empowering them with basic rights and creating more opportunities for their health and wellbeing. Grounded in the Culture-Centred Approach (CCA), this qualitative study employs semi-structured interviews and participant observation to amplify the voices of marginalised elderly individuals and to examine how they navigate health, agency and structure within their cultural contexts.

As part of her work at CARE, she is also engaged in research related to the health experiences of Chinese migration in New Zealand and left-behind families in China.

Her broader research interests include health communication, digital health, intercultural communication, migrant health and ageing.

Before beginning her doctoral studies, Shucen worked as a Lecturer in Journalism and Media Production at a university in China. She also served in a provincial Department of Education, contributing to public education initiatives. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and Documentary Practice from the University of Sussex where her reseach focused on the communication of Chinese culture in the UK.
